When did the Premier League start?

The English Premier League was founded in 1992, and began its first season (1992/93) in August of the same year. Believe it or not, there are only 6 clubs from that original line-up that have never been relegated from the Premier League: Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Big 6? We think Manchester City may have something to say about that now.

How many games are played in the Premier League season?

Currently, there are 20 teams within the Premier League, this means that each team plays one another home and away - equalling 38 matches for each individual team and 380 glorious games in total across the entire season. Ahhh, English football heaven.

The Premier League doesn’t differ from some of the other top leagues across Europe in this respect with Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A and France’s Ligue 1 all enjoying 380 matches per season too. The German Bundesliga and Scottish Premiership are the outliers, both with only 34 league matches per team. Throw in a bulky international fixture calendar and we’ve got ourselves one juicy feast of football.

Who scored the first Premier League goal and hat-trick?

Brian Deane of Sheffield United holds the honour of scoring the first ever Premier League goal, launching himself in for a back-post header against Man Utd on 15th August 1992. One arm in the air himself, Alan Shearer has scored the most goals in the league with 260 for Blackburn and Newcastle United.

Eric Cantona scored the Premier League’s first ever hat-trick on 25th August 1992, when he was playing for Leeds United against Spurs - it was a tidy collection, consisting of a neat side-footed finish, a bullet header and a volley. Not bad.
