Cardiff City Unveil New Premier League Kits
The bizarre story of Cardiff’s kits has a new chapter, as the Bluebirds finally gear up for their return to the top-flight.
The story of Cardiff City football kits is certainly a strange one.
Affectionately known as the Bluebirds, the Welsh side had worn a suitable blue strip since 1908, creating over 100 years of history and tradition. After playing in all four tiers of the English Football League, the dark blue Cardiff kits became synonymous with the Bluebirds, which is exactly why their nickname has always stuck.
But in 2012 everything changed. Club owner Vincent Tan decided it was time for a complete rebrand of the club, and resolved to not only change Cardiff’s iconic crest, but to also change the colour of their home kits from blue to red.
It was a move that didn’t go down too well in the Welsh capital. As soon as the changes were unveiled, you could practically hear supporters spitting brews out in disbelief, with the majority of fans up in arms over the club’s change of identity. In the sudden blink of an eye, it seemed as though the Bluebirds had been completely replaced by dragons.
However, the brand change never really seemed to suit Cardiff, and fans never got over the changes enforced by Tan. In short, it was all very strange; after all, you could never imagine a club like Manchester United or Liverpool suddenly deciding to play in blue, could you?
Half-way through the 2014/15 season, Tan finally relented to fan pressure and returned the kits to their traditional shade of blue. Now, just 3 years later, Cardiff City are back in the Premier League, and adidas have provided us with the next instalment of their football kit tale.
Released just last weekend, the 2018/19 Cardiff City football kits have gone down very well indeed with Bluebirds supporters. Following a cheeky teaser on social media, hype was building as fans waited expectantly for the official full release- and it seems as though it was certainly worthy of all the excitement.
Designed by adidas, the new Cardiff home kit offers a much more traditional strip than the last time the Bluebirds were in the Premier League. Finally getting to show off their iconic shades of blue, Cardiff’s home kit features a subtle striped graphic across the front, with a two-tone pattern allowing the white logos to stand out prominently.
On the shoulders, the trademark Three Stripes offers a lovely contrast to the blue colourway, while the famous Bluebird crest sits on the chest alongside the adidas logo. Once again sponsored by Visit Malaysia, Cardiff will be hoping blue proves to be a lucky colour in the Premier League this time around. Well, they can’t do much worse than they did in red, right?
The new strip makes use of the innovative Climalite technology, which we expect to see in the majority of the adidas Premier League kits this summer. On the back of the shirt, a solitary bluebird can be found soaring up near the collar, offering a little detail that’s sure to go down well with fans.
It’s great to see Cardiff back in the Premier League in their traditional blue colours, and you can go ahead and pick up the new home strip from 30th June.
