For the oceans - United unveil new third shirt

On the 50th anniversary of their first European Cup victory, Manchester United have brought out a new third kit in collaboration with Parley.

The brand new United third shirt

It’s unusual to see a third kit released so early, but the red side of Manchester have gone with blue for the colour of their new third shirt for the 2018/19 season. An interesting choice at first glance, the colour was actually worn by United 50 years ago when they beat Benfica 4-1 in the European Cup final, becoming the first English side to win the trophy.

What’s more, the design is a collaboration between United, adidas and Parley. The environmental movement have dabbled in the kit world with one-off releases for the MLS and Real Madrid in the past, and this new shirt is a first for the English game. As well as some nice Parley detailing, the kit is notably made from recycled Ocean Plastic®.

Design wise, a hexagon-based graphic flows across the shirt, evoking the ocean. Things are kept simple with the collar, and the design carries over on the back and sleeves, something of a rarity in today’s shirt world. An all-gold colourway for the adidas logo and crest complete the look, matching nicely with the main Chevrolet sponsor.
