The excitement for the Russian 2018 World Cup is palpable. The Final Draw is just over a week away, and we can’t wait to see which teams England, as well as everyone else, will be drawn against.

The teams will be drawn in Moscow by Match of the Day host - and former World Cup Golden boot winner - Gary Lineker. Joining the crisp-loving sports broadcaster at the State Kremlin Palace for the draw will be Russian Sports journalist Maria Komandnaya; one of the most well-known sports journalists, with over a decade of experience on radio and television.

The final play-off games led to some real heartbreak for Italy, who failed to reach the tournament for only the second time ever. The mighty Swedes put in a real shift at the San Siro, securing their place in Russia and adding extra motivation for the mighty Zlatan Ibrahimović to come out of international retirement so we can enjoy his World Cup exploits one last time.

Ireland, after holding out for a draw away from home, looked well on course to reach the tournament as they hosted Denmark on home soil. The scene was set - but the performance didn’t match up. Denmark went on to batter the Irish with the score line finishing five goals to one. We can only imagine what Roy Keane was like in that dressing room at full time.

The final two places were settled as Australia triumphed over Honduras thanks to a hat-trick by former Crystal Palace man Mile Jedinak, and Peru finished off New Zealand with a 2-0 aggregate victory.

After 868 matches and 2454 goals, the 32 teams have their eye on the coveted FIFA World Cup Trophy. With the pots announced, fans have been drawing up their groups of death and their dream draws for next year’s tournament.

Personally, we’re hoping for:

  • Poland
  • England
  • Iran
  • Panama

Although, with the way the last few major tournaments have gone, we wouldn’t be holding our breath even with such a favourable draw. The image of Gareth Southgate bringing on Jordan Henderson in our most desperate hour doesn’t exactly fill us with much confidence…
