White Nike Air Max 2090 trainer on city background with 8 best Nike Air Max 2090 colourway text

We believe this 2020 release from Nike is the most visually stimulating silhouette in recent memory. Simple as that. This is the obvious appeal of the Nike Air Max 2090. As usual though, there is so much more to this model than meets the eye.

Collector or casual wearer, everyone should have this trainer in their grasp. The 2090 is a distinct nod to, and celebration of, the 30-year-old classic angles of the famous Air Max 90. Effortlessly merging retro design with futuristic creativity and technology.

What are the key features of the Nike Air Max 2090?

A rubber heel badge sits proudly, as it does on the Air Max 90. An elasticated pull tab on the heel support adds a level of practicality and individualism. Finished off with an oversized tongue, this trainer wooed crowds when it was launched at Nike’s annual Air Max Day in 2020.

Nike have seriously dialled up the Air midsole for more premium comfort and added exterior stitching to give the shoe a somewhat deconstructed look. Throw in a translucent synthetic upper and an outline-only iconic Swoosh, then you’ve got a style which is not here to mess around.

We’re here to explore the perfect selection of AM2090 colourways to match any wardrobe, so let’s get on with it…

Nike Air Max 2090 - Infrared/Dark Sage/Baroque Brown/Black

Something you’ll have learnt is that Nike are fans of a highly descriptive colourway. We’re going to summarise them in this article for sanity, by our reckoning, that would make this the AM2090 red/black.

A clean white midsole coupled with contrast lacing works well to spread light across the dark palette. The distinctive red heel multiplies its impact by knitting the matching heel tab, tongue detail and exterior stitching together.

The most underrated aspect of this sneaker is, without a doubt, the subtle camouflage detailing that sits under mesh on the upper. With that said, we think people will definitely see you coming in them.

Nike Air Max 2090 - White/Pure Platinum/Bright Crimson/Black

In fairness to Nike, they make it difficult to simplify their colourways. This one I’m struggling with. Let’s call it black/white with a dash of blue/orange. There’s no doubt that it works though, 100%.

The contrasts are where this particular silhouette shows off. Merging black laces and tongue with a bright crimson heel pull and stitching is a big ask. Chuck in brazen blue toe detail and the AM team were really testing themselves, yet it’s all been executed brilliantly.

This is our pick if you want to liven it up, make a bolder statement and add a dash of colour.

Nike Air Max 2090 - Deep Royal Blue/Black/Active Fuchsia/Chrome Yellow

Probably the loudest choice on our list. In most rooms, if you said you were going to mix (chrome) yellow and (fuchsia) purple together, you’d hear the inevitable sound of a lonesome tumbleweed in the distance. Apparently not at Nike HQ.

Big, bold ideas are what drives the Air Max collection forward, this colourway is no different. Because of black panelling and a fresh white midsole, the intricate purples and yellows are kept apart so as to not assault the eyes. Yet, are linked enough to appear as a finished work of art should.

They may not work with every single outfit in your wardrobe, but when they come out to play it won’t be quietly.

Pearly whites. I’m not sure it’s even called a trainer collection unless it contains a pair of fresh white wheels? Of course, the AM 2090 team has produced one of the best examples we’ve ever seen.

Make sure you’re coupling these up with your white sports socks, anything else will show through the mild grey mesh detailing on the upper. There’s not much else to say except, if you don’t want to break your heart, don’t wear these near puddles.

Guaranteed to work in perfect harmony with all your fashion selections, it’s an easy decision to own at least one pair.

I believe the saying goes, “where there is darkness, there must be light”. Well, not exactly in this case. For those who prefer a more understated silhouette, the black 2090 is unrivalled.

Much like the white AM 2090, this colourway holds a slight grey to the upper. Pure black detailing is strewn across the outsole, midsole, heel and tongue help to cradle the upper mesh and give it notoriety.

If white trainers can go with everything, black can do the same. Do the right thing and get them in your collection.

Nike Air Max 2090 - Ice Blue/Laser Orange/White/Black

Already have enough white trainers to be boxfresh every day? You’re bossing it. If you’re looking for something off-white to mix it up, this is the shoe for you.

The AM 2090 Ice Blue colourway hosts the distinctive Swoosh motif in solid black on the lateral side of each upper, coupled with a pure black contrast heel pull tab for impact. Faint yellow exterior stitching adds to the sneaker’s summery vibe.

If you’ve had enough of white, yet don’t want to shift completely leftfield with colours, we think this is the perfect stepping-stone.

Nike Air Max 2090 - White/Volt/Valerian Blue/Black

Talking of loud, the white/volt/blue/black 2090s are a huge statement piece. People say you’re a real character, simply because you can pull these off every day.

The almost neon upper, heel pull and exposed stitching brighten up this silhouette to eye-catching levels. An off-white midsole helps to link the recognisable blue Air bubble heel with the contrast black panelling of the lateral upper.

In our opinion, if you’re after the wow factor, the surefire option is to stride about the streets in a pair of these.

Nike Air Max 2090 - Wolf Grey/Particle Grey/Pure Platinum/White

Need a shade in between your extensive white and black collection? This grey breed of AM 2090 could be the perfect addition.

Another melting pot of well-defined contrasts brought together with aplomb. Yellow detailing pops against multiple tones of grey, whilst the solid black Nike Air unit, heel tab and outer sole ground the design perfectly.

A wholly no-nonsense option with lively dashes of bold yellow, this is a versatile trainer that any Nike appreciator needs to cherish.
